This comes down to preference The natural soft charcoal is more traditional for soldering, whereas the hard compressed blocks are more modern. Natural charcoal is used to help embed your pieces so that they don't move when soldering, it is also better for the use of pins and creating a jig. Compressed charcoal is harder and heavier than the standard soft charcoal blocks, it reflects more heat in a shorter period of time. Compressed charcoal is made more dense, and therefore less crumbly whilst under pressure and will usually last longer.
