The boards are made with a small amount of organic binder which burns out on first firing. This causes the board to turn black and gives of some smoke which is normal. Once the binder has completely burnt out, the board will revert to the original colour and this burn out will not occur again. Normally this process happens with the kiln door shut and other than an unpleasant odour, the user will be unaware of the colour change. The binder is a starch and off-gassing contains nothing harmful.
