The blackening of the boards and the off-gassing is perfectly normal and to be expected.
Almost all boards of this type contain a percentage of organic binder which give the products an excellent cold handling strength, allowing them to be man-handled, machined & cut to size with relative ease.
The organic binder begins to burn-out at around 190?C, this can cause a blackening effect and smell. Depending on the temperature the boards are being fired at - and the time duration - the board will return to an off-white colour when all the binder has been burnt-out, and will no longer smell or give off ‘fumes’. The off-gassing, though not very pleasant, is not harmful but good ventilation is advised during this process.
